To celebrate this grit, the Government of India honors the finest minds through the prestigious Best Trainee & Cadet Awards.

The Pinnacle of Academic Glory

To encourage the future generation of seafarers, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways recognizes top performers from various maritime training institutes. These awards are presented during the annual National Maritime Day celebrations.

Best IMU Cadet

Awarded to the most outstanding student across all campuses of the Indian Maritime University (IMU). This takes into account academic brilliance, leadership, and extracurricular participation.

Best Nautical Trainee

Reserved for the top performer in the Deck department (DNS or B.Sc Nautical Science) who shows exceptional navigation and seamanship potential.

Best Marine Engineer Trainee

Given to the cadet who masters the complexities of ship machinery, showcasing innovative technical skills in the engine room.

Qualification: How to Be a Winner?

Becoming the "Best" requires more than just high marks. The selection committee looks for a holistic "Officer Like Quality" (OLQ). Key requirements include:

• Academic Rank: Must be in the top 1% of the graduating batch.
• Attendance & Discipline: A flawless record throughout the training period.
• Leadership: Serving as a Cadet Captain or leading college technical fests.
• Practical Skills: Exceptional performance in workshop practice, bridge simulations, or engine room drills.
• Physical Fitness: Excellence in sports or parade drills.

Prize Amounts & Recognition Details

The honor of being recognized by the Government of India is priceless, but it also comes with tangible rewards to boost a young seafarer's career:

Cash Prize	Typically ranges from INR 50,000 to INR 1,50,000 depending on the specific category.
The Trophy	A prestigious memento/shield presented by the Union Minister of Shipping.

How to Apply for the Awards?

Cadets do not apply for these awards directly. The process is based on institutional merit:

1. Institute Nomination: Recognized Maritime Training Institutes (MTIs) and IMU campuses identify their toppers based on the final semester results.
2. Dossier Submission: The MTI sends a detailed performance report of the candidate to the National Maritime Day Celebrations (Central) Committee.
3. Shortlisting: The DGS committee reviews the nominees from all over India.
4. Final Selection: The final names are announced just before April 5th (National Maritime Day).
