Honoring the Legends of the High Seas Nominated by India

When the ocean turns violent and the line between life and death thins, true heroes emerge. While the International Maritime Organization (IMO) recognizes global bravery, the Government of India plays a pivotal role in scouting and nominating our nation’s finest seafarers for the world to see.

"In 2016, the world stood still as **Captain Radhika Menon** became the first woman in history to receive the IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea. Her heroic rescue of seven fishermen in the turbulent Bay of Bengal proved that bravery knows no gender."

What is the IMO Bravery Award?

The IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea is an international medal that recognizes individuals who, at the risk of losing their own lives, perform acts of extraordinary bravery, involving outstanding courage in attempting to save life at sea or in attempting to prevent or mitigate damage to the marine environment.

The Medal

The highest level, awarded for the most extraordinary acts of bravery that risked the nominee's life.

Certificates of Commendation

The Nomination & Application Process

Individuals cannot apply directly for the IMO Bravery Award. The process is strictly institutional:

  1. Incident Report: The Master of the ship or the Shipping Company must report the heroic act to the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS).
  2. Verification: DGS investigates the logbooks, witness statements, and evidence.
  3. National Approval: A committee under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways selects the strongest case to represent India.
  4. Submission: India submits the formal nomination to the IMO Secretary-General in London for international judging.

Legacy of Captain Radhika Menon

India takes immense pride in Captain Radhika Menon's 2016 win. Commanding the tanker *Sampurna Swarajya*, she spotted a drifting fishing boat during a severe storm. Braving 25-foot waves and heavy rain, her team saved seven lives. Her story remains the gold standard for Indian maritime nominations.
